Parents Attend Presentation About Anxiety
On Thursday, April 4, concerned parents gathered in the library great room to learn from Sydney Dickerson, a therapist from Good Mourning Counseling Center, about how to help their teenagers deal with anxiety. She covered topics including the signs of stress and anxiety, triggers for it, and possible diagnoses such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, one in eight children are affected by anxiety disorders. Dickerson informed parents on ways they could help their students with anxiety, including improving their sleep and nutrition. To finish the presentation students Glen Liu ‘21, Samer Salman ‘21, and Harini Venkoba Rao ‘20 shared how they deal with their own anxiety and how their parents help them.
“Anxiety is an issue I feel strongly about, especially in our community because there are a lot of people who have dealt with it, and are dealing with it, and people need to know that it exists and how to help with it.” Liu said.
