Mr. Eric Scheiber Joins Westwood Faculty
Mr. Eric Scheiber joined Westwood this year as a Pre-AP/Pre-IB and IB Biology teacher. Mr. Scheiber is from Indiana, where he was born and raised. He went on to attend University of Southern Indiana, earning a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in secondary education. Previously, Mr. Scheiber taught at Evansville Central High School in Evansville, Indiana. Mr. Scheiber was surprised by the differences of his previous school and Westwood.
“My old school had 1100 students; Westwood has almost 3000. My old school was definitely a lot smaller,” Mr. Scheiber said. “The hallways were definitely not as confusing at my previous school.”
Mr. Scheiber is undoubtedly excited about meeting a new group of students and sharing his love for biology. His interest in teaching stems from the variety of activities in the day to day life of a teacher.
“I love how everyday is different; it constantly changes. It’s definitely unpredictable, but I like that aspect,” Mr. Scheiber said. “I don’t always know what to expect, but I do enjoy the company of my students. They are sociable and I thrive off of that.”
Mr. Scheiber greatly enjoys teaching biology for various reasons, as he likes to watch his students interact with the different aspects of biology.
“I think biology has a lot of real-world applications. I mean, biology is all around us,” Mr. Scheiber said. “My students can learn about biology while seeing everything that’s around them.”
Teaching biology has also affected Mr. Scheiber’s point of view in his daily activities. Since he enjoys traveling in his free time, he noticed an overlap between his love for travelling and biology.
“Whenever I travel, I love seeing the different biomes and ecosystems in different places. It’s definitely one of the first things I notice,” Mr. Scheiber said.
Mr. Scheiber moved to Austin in early June, and adjusted well despite the differences between Austin and his previous city in Indiana. The endless activities appeal to him the most out of all aspects of Austin.
“I feel like here in Austin, there’s always something to do,” Mr. Scheiber said. “Every interest group or event that pertains to somebody.”
Some goals that Mr. Scheiber has include making his students feel more confident about upcoming exams. He understands the significance of the end-of-the year tests and the great importance it holds to his students.
“This year, I want my students to truly learn. For my freshman, this would mean helping them adequately prepare for their STAAR test. For my IB students, I would want to make sure they feel comfortable for their IB exam,” Mr. Scheiber said.“While we prepare for these tests, I hope to have a successful and fun year.”
Overall, Mr. Scheiber is looking forward to the school year and hopes to engage his students to the fullest extent.
