’34+35 (Remix)’ Equals Perfection

34+35 was one of the fan favorites off of Ariana Grande’s sixth studio album, Positions. The dynamic beat along with the catchy, clear lyricism had fans hooked in perfect time for the release of the Austin Powers inspired music video. Grande followed her success with Positions perfectly as the artist and her team released a remix of 34+35. As 34+35 is arguably one of the most lyrically explicit songs on the album, it was only fate for Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion, both big names in the female rap industry, to hop on the track. Doja and Megan took 34+35 to the next level with the remix, each taking a verse and rapping out fun, creative lyrics to accompany the light-hearted experience the song brings. 

The three female artists absolutely nailed the remix with each vocalist owning a moment of the song. Grande kept up her simple pop performance throughout the song and though it was lacking her usual riffs, her voice still manages to be addictive. In a similar routine, Doja never fails to impress her fans with her creative word choice and the iconic energy she brings to her verses. Megan’s verse was especially notable as the flow and lyricism broke the stereotype many fans gave her as “repetitive” after her debut album – Good News – was released. All possessing famous names in the music industry, the collaboration between Ariana, Doja, and Megan did not go unseen and racked up an outstanding amount of attention from fans of the singers.

The song itself was fantastic, as it balanced the voices of all three artists perfectly which could have been challenging as Ariana, Doja, and Megan all have very different styles and voices. The song opens with the catchy chorus of Ariana’s original 34+35 and quickly speeds into Doja’s verse in which she has impressive rhymes and compelling inflections in her voice. Doja really brought her character to the song through her self-written lyrics displaying her amusing attitude. Megan brought the same energy into her verse and had a remarkable flow which actually tied the song together wonderfully. She makes random references in a classy way, taking fans by surprise at how well she is able to incorporate challenging lyrics to the beat of a pop song. These artists and their legendary voices blend together beautifully and have reconstructed 34+35 in a completely different, more impactful fashion than the original.

Ariana Grande and Doja Cat had also collaborated earlier on the album in their song Motive. While many people enjoyed Motive, many listeners complained that Grande and Doja could’ve done better seeing as they are both astounding artists. 34+35 (Remix) avenged the fans’ discontent and brought them exactly what they were looking for: a catchy pop song with an iconic rap verse. The addition of Megan to the song was a very good move as she brought a new layer of rap to the song, which in turn added a bigger diversity between this song and Motive. 

Overall, 34+35 (Remix) is one for the charts. In just a day, the song’s lyric video was able to receive over three million views and completely dominate the trending tab on Twitter. These three stars of the music industry all featured on the same song came as a surprise to all, but did not disappoint a single person. Ariana, Doja, and Megan never fail to impress their fans and this project was no exception to that sentiment. The remix of 34+35 equals perfection and is the ideal checkpoint in Ariana Grande’s Positions era, leaving fans on the edge of their seats for whatever is to come next from the Pop Princess.
