On Friday, Dec. 17, the Lady Warriors varsity basketball team succeeded in winning against Hutto High School. Despite initially being overtaken by their opponents, the Warriors’ showcased impressive offensive and steady defensive skills during the game to bring the team to a 46-34 win.

Though the Warriors were ahead for a few minutes at the beginning of the game, the Hippos managed to bypass the Warriors’ defense, and despite strong offensive efforts from Caroline Hand ‘22, the quarter ended with Hutto ahead by one point, 6-7.

In the second quarter the Warriors brought an energized defense, with both Olivia Yang ‘23 and Simryn Jacob ‘24 scoring, as well as Izzy Brown ‘22, who led the team to turn the tide against Hutto in the second half of the game. As the second quarter ended, however, Hutto seemed to be gaining momentum despite fantastic coordination on the Warriors’ part, and the score was 19-14 at halftime.

“It was a tough, hard-fought battle, Hutto beat us early in the season in a tournament,” Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Doug Davalos said. “We started slow, but our defense was really good the whole game. We got back to where our defense created offense for us and that was big. Izzy Brown was huge. She’s a senior and she stepped up and had the best game that she’s had this year.”

Both Mackenzie Ward ‘23 and Desi Davalos ‘22 made thorough efforts to score in the final parts of the game, as the Warriors brought the score up 31-18. Hand scored a three-pointer for the Warriors, nearly securing the Westwood win despite Hutto building power and striking back throughout the final minutes of the game. Brown once again scored in a free throw.

“My teammates and I all played our hearts out. They started making a comeback but we shut them down. I’m lucky to call these girls my teammates,” Brown said.

Westwood Varsity Girls’ Basketball will next play Round Rock High School after the new year on Friday, Jan. 4.
