The Warriors’ home court was filled with rousing energy and cheer for the varsity tennis team’s game against Westlake High School on Thursday, Aug. 29. Playing brilliantly for their third game of the season, the Warriors remain undefeated with a final score of 16-2.
Prior to each player’s match, the Warriors stay hydrated and cheer loudly for other teammates who were competing to encourage them toward the win. The booster club parents assisted in providing water bottles and drinks for the players, supporting each team member.
“[Before my matches] I drink a lot of Gatorade and make sure I don’t have any cramps. Usually, I like to have a pickle.” Anwi Duduka ‘25 said.
Duduka paired up with Janya Tellabati ‘26 to compete in girls’ doubles matches, which ended in an additional round for the tiebreaker. The girls were victorious in the first round with a score of 6-4, but shortly fell behind with a 2-6 loss in the second round. Breaking the tie with a score of 11-9, the duo was able to redeem their win, putting Westwood up against Westlake.
“I think I did pretty good on doubles, but we still went to tie breaks. I guess [it was important] to motivate my teammates and myself to avoid losing more than we already did,” Duduka said. “Our main goal is to win state again. We lost a lot of seniors last year so that might be tough, so maybe just getting to state.”
In the women’s line three singles for girls, Lily Wang ‘27 effortlessly swept her opponent 8-4, remaining strong for her line two doubles. Wang then went on to beat her next match in the first and second sets.
“For singles, my strategy was to just keep the ball deep and be consistent,” Wang said. “Because I know that my opponent likes to hit my ball really flat, as long as I keep the ball deep and move around a bit, [I knew] I will be able to win.”
After the game’s conclusion, the Warriors celebrated their win with well-earned donuts after bidding Westlake a good game.
Varsity tennis will play against Lake Travis High School on Tuesday, Sep. 3 at home.
