Three teams, two undefeated district champions, and one playoff bid is the perfect way to summarize the girls’ basketball season this past season.
The biggest success story came with the varsity girls’ team, which managed to dribble its way to victory for only the second time in twelve years and the first time under Coach Doug Davalos. A winning combination of hard work, constant practice every day, seasoned players, and a highly skilled coach pushed the team to success.
“I think that there is a good chance that we will do well at playoffs,” Sophie Taylor ‘16 said. “We already won our first playoff game against Westlake High School in overtime and we have worked really hard to get to where we are today.”
However, their success did not come from working alone; it was a result of working together. After the JV team finished their season, they spent the rest of their class time helping the varsity team prepare for their games. They learned the plays from their opposing team that varsity would use in a game, played against them in practice just to drill them, and even traveled with them to all of their games to show support.
“It’s important to support the varsity team because they are all amazing people and my friends and everyone wants them to go as far as they can in the playoffs,” Meaghan Hendricks ‘18 said.
While there are no playoffs for the JV or Freshman teams, they both had something to be proud of. Both were undefeated in district and brought home the title of district champion. The JV team finished with a record of 28-1 and 14-0 in district play.
“This is one of the best seasons we have ever had in school history,” Christina Maunder ‘17 said. “It’s been so long since we became district champions that no one can even remember!”
The freshman team had an overall record of 26-2 and 14-0 in district play. They used teamwork, determination, and hard work to not just start, but also finish strong.
“When we worked on the little things, it definitely translated into bigger things on the court which is evident by our winning record and championship title!” Karissa Simchick ‘18 said.
