Break Dance Club’s Student Council Representative Nathan Hoang joined the club as a beginner dancer, and in the two years he’s been apart of it, his dancing abilities have improved and he’s met amazing individuals that have become like his second family.
“Our club used to be small, so every member is like family to me. I’ve met some really cool people that I wouldn’t have guessed had any form of experience with dancing,” Hoang ‘16 said. “Just making friends and being able to show our passion for music and dancing in the form of a performance is always an exhilarating thing.”
No prior experience is necessary, and the club says they appreciate all dancing.
“I actually used to do more traditional Chinese dance,” member Angela Wang ‘17 said. “I’ve been break dancing for about a year now, so it’s relatively new to me. I just think it’s a really cool way for people to express themselves.”
“A lot of people don’t have the confidence to dance in public, but the friendly environment this club has allows them to be able to let loose and shine,” Hoang said. “Everybody has some form of talent when it comes to dancing, all that changes between people is the courage to dance. Break Dance Club helps people willingly dance, which also makes them more confident in life.”
The club meets every Friday and practices in the dance portable or the dance studio, pretty much wherever there are mirrors. Performances are optional and include places like the pep rally, IBSO Talent Show, Taste of Asia, Night of Pastabilites and Escapade, but if you commit to a performance, multiple rehearsals are required a week.
“The atmosphere is very welcoming, and everyone’s just there to have fun,” Wang ‘17 said. Don’t be intimidated, or think you have to already know how to dance. Also, just be yourself. That’s the best part about breakdance club; we’re a pretty eclectic group of people.”
