The Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club hosted their first meeting Tuesday, September 9 at 8:15 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. in Ms. Trevino’s room E1303. HOSA is an organization that helps students develop leadership and professional skills in the healthcare field. The club welcomed the 140 students who attended.
Ms. Trevino is the sponsor of HOSA and helps to oversee the organization. “I enjoy working with students who are interested in future health care career,” Ms. Trevino said.
During the meeting, HOSA officers explained new plans and goals for the year.
“HOSA offers its members valuable opportunities, via competitions and volunteer opportunities,” new member Tanvi Ingle ‘18 said. “I find both of them integral to understanding what is involved with the medical field.”
Members of HOSA participate in various events throughout the year. Students compete in Area, the first level of competition held in Pflugerville. Finalists advance to state in Dallas. There, students who place high enough have the opportunity to travel to California where Nationals takes place.
“HOSA has had many students place on the state level and even had national recognition last year with competitions,” President of HOSA Jae Hee Cho ‘15 said.
Students compete in various categories including health professions, emergency preparedness, and leadership events.
Not only is HOSA a prestigious organization known for its achievements, it also applies the skills and knowledge learned through these events in volunteer work.
“When we aren’t doing competitions, we do community service. We are trying to make an impact through volunteering,” Cho said.
One service that they host is Take10. This acts as an initiative to improve cardiac arrest survival in the community by teaching compressions and CPR to the public.
With many projects in store, HOSA plans on making this school year a success for this organization.
