Student Council is an organization primarily focused on contributing to our local community. Student Council – commonly referred to as StuCo – hosted its first meeting Tuesday, September 9 at 8:30 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. in Ms. Martinez’s room (D1323).
“The main goal of ours for this year is to compete and hopefully win the Texas Association of Student Council’s Top Ten Award,” President of Student Council Jesse Huang ‘15 said. “Our project this year is called 12 Days of Giving.”
Through this, Student Council plans to include all the clubs in various community service projects. By pairing them up with one another, each group of organizations will be able to collaboratively perform unique acts of volunteering.
“I enjoy many aspects of Student Council, but I especially believe in its mission of promoting citizenship, scholarship, leadership, human relations, and cultural values,” Class of 2017 sponsor Ms. MilyBett Llanos said.
Student Council is also divided into sub-committees such as Teacher Appreciation and Community Service. Each of these groups host their own events that pertains to their individual projects. This week, the Pride and Patriotism committee sponsored Howdy Week where students dressed up to celebrate our state, country, and school. Some larger events Student Council sponsors includes the male beauty pageant, Mr.Warrior, the Homecoming Parade, and Prom.
“I am looking forward to working on all these different events because they bring Westwood together and allows for school bonding,” Freshman Representative Srija Reddy ‘18 said.
After deliberation, Student Council decided on the theme of “Games” for the homecoming parade. They have begun to plan and organize this event, encouraging other clubs to create floats pertaining to this topic. There will be a competition for the best one. Mr. Warrior is an event where male students compete in a beauty pageant. This serves as a main fundraiser for Student Council. Lastly, the year culminates with the largest event: Prom. Student Council prepares all year for this night in order to make it a memorable time for our upperclassmen. Student Council is an organization based on serving the community and they have many upcoming projects to share with our school this year.
