Anderson Trojans defeat Warriors 42-39

The Westwood Warriors (0-2) and the Anderson Trojans (2-0) played an excellent game that was ultimately decided in the last five minutes. Despite the outcome, the game showcased excellent overall play from both teams.

In spite of a rough start, the Warriors found their rhythm in the second quarter. After an Anderson fumble, Jack Swensen ‘16 made a beautiful pass to Will Jennings ‘18 to tie up the score at 14 towards the end of the first half.

Both sides of the stadium were full of excited chatter as each school looked to support their team. Senior Max Zhao added that it felt “real good” to have such a close game going into the second half.

At the end of a tough drive for Westwood, a field goal by Josh Burton ‘16 seemed to swing the momentum towards the Warriors as they recovered another Anderson fumble. After quick touchdowns from each team, the score remained close at 24-21 in favor of Westwood.

A rough fourth quarter for the Warriors proved to be the deciding factor in an otherwise close game. After a fumble by the Warriors in the end zone, Westwood fans looked a little disheartened, but an excellent touchdown by Te’shon McGinnis ’17 livened up the fans once again as the gap closed to 42-39.

The Warriors’ final push did not prove to be enough, but the they will have a chance to carry their momentum against Cedar Park on Thursday, Sep 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex.
