Eager to jump start the new school year, DECA, the Association of Marketing Students, hosted their second meeting on Sep. 15th with a session both before and after school. During the meeting, students were introduced to what the club stands for and the activities they would be doing during the year. Students also listened to powerpoint presentations on the club’s projects and goals for the year.
DECA is made up of approximately 215,000 people and more than 3,500 participating high schools throughout different regions and states. The club is aimed towards students and entrepreneurs in business, finance, and advertizing, and helps them become college and career ready.
“We are one of the largest DECA chapters in Texas,” club sponsor Beverly Cowsert said. “We encourage business leaders to be a part of this club.”
To make the cut for the club, students must be enrolled in a career technology course and meet a fundraising requirement throughout the year. Students can reach these goals by volunteering at UT Austin football game fundraisers. The club also has a second fundraising campaign starting later in the year called ‘Moving for Military Kids’.
Students compete in competitions at district, state, and international levels, as well as attend educational conferences to help prepare them for their future.
“I joined DECA because you can travel to state and district conferences and compete against other regions,” Shelby Castleberry ’19 said. “A lot of my friends are doing it and it looked like fun.”
The next DECA meeting is on Sep. 29. For more information, contact Ms. Cowsert or visit the DECA website at tinyurl.com/wwdeca.
