Open House was on Monday, Sept. 21. Parents met the teachers of their children and got a true idea of the classes their kids are taking. They received the schedules of their children and walked to each of their classes, attending presentations that the teachers gave.
Parents had five minutes to transfer from block to block, getting an opportunity to step into the shoes of their kids. Some of them had difficulty locating classrooms in our large school that can be confusing to those who haven’t been inside it often. Nuha Momin ‘19 attended Open House along with her parents.
“It can be hard finding your way around school by yourself, so I didn’t want them to have all that pressure,” Momin said. “If they get a phone call home from school that I was tardy to class, I think they would understand now because they’ve seen how much walking distance I have to cover in that time.”
Each presentation the teachers conducted lasted about 10 minutes.
“During my presentation I talked about the class policy, introduced myself, and addressed questions and concerns,” math teacher Meiling Dang said.
Most teachers did the same; their presentations contained information about them and the classes. During or after each slideshow, parents were able to ask the teachers questions.
“Parents are more concerned on how their students learn rather than what they learn,” social studies teacher Dale Fritch said. “They wonder, ‘is the work meaningful?’”
Parents got the opportunity to know the teachers and the content of the classes.
“Open House is one of the only times I get to have face-to-face contact with parents. It allows them to feel like a part of the classroom,” dance teacher Angelique Scrudder said.
This annual event is a great way to start up the year; not only can students immerse themselves in a learning experience, but also their parents are informed of what’s going on during school as well.
