Mole day is a new tradition at Westwood brought about by Mrs. Nicole White, chemistry teacher. Her first Mole Day effort in 2013 was a small event with only a few interactive happenings, but each year she has found that students truly enjoyed Mole Day and all of its celebrations, so this year the chemistry teachers went all out.
“It was lit! The fact that we could celebrate Avogadro’s number in a fun way made it easier to understand,” Garrett Aylor ‘18 said. “My favorite part was creating the aluminum sculpture and how we had to incorporate 6.022X10²³ (which is the Mole number) into it. I’m definitely going to celebrate next year.”
One of the new incorporations that Mrs. White made for her class was the Mole Captain. This title is an honor and is voted on by the entire class. Her second block class elected Jake Morrow ‘18 for this honor. He was chosen by his peers because of his enthusiasm for chemistry or simply put, by being crazy.
“This was the best class by far,” Morrow said. “It was hilarious because I didn’t take any notes, because my being the Mole Captain, I had to be prepared at all times. Why you ask? Because each time she said Mole I had to use my party blower to announce that Mole was being used. Everyone giggled each time I did it, and one of the times we were taking silent notes, she mentioned Mole in passing and I blew it so hard that a bunch of people actually jumped in their seats.”
