Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) held their second meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 4:20 p.m. after school. During the meeting, future competitions and volunteer events were discussed.
While attending the meeting, students were able to learn CPR through a program called TAKE10. TAKE10 focuses on teaching people how to perform the simplest kind of CPR in under 10 minutes.
“In the past, CPR was very structured and had a lot of ratios and rules, and people were hesitant to act in an emergency,” Sponsor of HOSA Ms. Trevino said. “TAKE10 has simplified it. They use hands only, they don’t worry about ratios, and it’s really going to help get people to respond faster.”
Students performed CPR on dummies, with the assistance of HOSA officers. “CPR is something you can use all your life,” Maanasa Cherukuvada ‘19 said. “It can help save someone else’s life, so it seems important to learn.”
Later on, students are encouraged to pass on their skills to others willing to learn CPR. On Saturday, Oct. 24 from 5-8 p.m., 10-15 students will have the opportunity to teach TAKE10 to other members of the community at Northwest Family YMCA. HOSA hopes to increase the number of people able to respond in an emergency situation.
“Raising awareness about heart health and safety can help people take action in emergency situations and save lives,” Officer Dhruva Athreya ‘16 said.
The next HOSA meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 8:30 a.m. and 4:20 p.m.
