The iOS 9 update for the Apple products is finally here, and while it brings new features through mini-updates, it is also bringing a battery life problem.
The update is the first major update to Apple products’ softwares since the iOS 8.4 update in June. Although abnormal battery drain isn’t uncommon after an iOS update, the fact that Apple boasted the iOS 9 update as a battery life booster has frustrated more than a few users of Apple’s mobile devices.
Looking at the current rate of discovery of battery-related problems, it is likely that there will be a solution update from Apple in the near future, but, until then, there are a few small ways to minimize battery loss:
- Look into your apps.
Head to Settings > Battery to see a list of battery use in the past 24 hours or 7 days. Tapping on the list will show how much battery each app consumed while running in the background. For any apps that are using an awful amount of battery, you can turn them off by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and toggling certain apps off. Toggling the apps off will disable them from running in the background and sucking the battery life when you aren’t using them.
- Use the ‘Low Power Mode’
iOS 9 introduced a new feature that will help you stretch the last 10-20% of battery life without any manual maneuvers – it will limit many items that you needed to control manually previously automatically. Simply turn on this feature by going to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
- Turn on ‘Airplane Mode’
When you’re in a place with spotty cellular service, your device will try extra hard to use any signal it can find to carry out background tasks such as checking for texts or notifications. This will rapidly drain the battery of a device. To combat this, you can turn on Airplane Mode at the top of Settings to stop your phone from searching for connections in the first place.
These are just few of the many ways that can prolong battery life. Technologically savvy individuals are constantly searching for new ways to get even more usable time on a single charge, so there may be new methods appearing very soon, especially in the midst of this let down from Apple.
