Student Council held a mock election in the cafeteria during all lunches on Monday, Oct. 19. Two Student Council members, Sophomore Class President Junu Lee ‘18 and Executive Co-Secretary Chris Ayoub ‘16, were at the table to record votes. Student Council handed out candy to encourage students to cast their vote.
“[The candy is] like an incentive for people to come because some may not be as politically motivated as others,” Lee said. “We still want to know what viewpoints they have, and so we invite them to come on.”
Aside from which president a voter wanted to vote for, the ballot also asked voters which presidential debates they had seen and which US History or other politics-related classes they had taken, if any. These questions were added to help determine how much background knowledge the voting students had.
“[The mock election] promotes [interest in politics] because when they see and realize that they’ve missed out on so much, some people will be more inclined to go out and watch more debates, check the news, follow the polls, things like that,” Ayoub said. “Just trying to get more people thinking politically minded when they may not necessarily be.”
About 50 people had voted by the time A lunch ended. The results of the Mock Election will be announced Friday, Oct. 23 and more detailed results will be posted on Student Council’s website.
“More and more, younger people have more interest in politics — especially since now it’s the campaign,” Lee said. “I think the school is politically active — not like being able to vote — but they have their own political opinions, and we want to know what they are.”
