On Nov. 18, physical education students from around the district will gather at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex (KRAC) to participate in the fifth annual Fit Games. The event started five years ago when Susan Nix, Round Rock ISD assistant athletic director, began to implement functional fitness classes in high schools that would focus less on playing team sports and more on improving natural abilities, such as running and lifting weights.
At the competition, teams of four will participate in CrossFit activities, like pushing weighted sleds and running with medicine balls. The competition encourages kids to work out and have fun, without being singled out. The Fit Games also promotes healthy living and being active.
“The students learn that the daily process – daily workout habits, consistent attitude and effort in PE – is the most important in creating a positive final product,” Coach Doug Davalos said.
By the end of the competition, six teams, three of each gender, will take first, second, and third place for their respective school. While the Fit Games are a fun way to get out and exercise, there is always a slight air of competition, as teams race against each other to snag the top three places.
“I’m looking forward to getting to meet new people and being able to support the other teams,” Ysavela Ybarra ’16 said.
Last year, one of our boys’ and girls’ teams each placed third. Wish those competing luck, and let’s beat that score this year.
