Freshman Tennis Team Succeeds at First Spring Tournament
The freshman tennis team played its first tournament of the spring season at Pflugerville High School and Hendrickson High School on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The team endured a windy, bitter day, but nonetheless emerged successfully. True to the Warriors’ fighting spirit, several players won their events with powerful shots and smart plays, bringing home trophies with pride.
“I think the tournament was very good for the team, because we won six trophies out of the whole freshman team,” Max Wolf ‘19 said.
The group was able to capture six of the eight top titles for this tournament, an exceptional feat that displayed their hard work found at each practice.
One particularly tense match of the tournament was played by Carolien van Heemskerck Pillis ‘19. This was the last match of the A draw bracket, so all of her teammates were there to support her and cheer. After van Heemskerck Pillis and her opponent each won one set, a ten point super tiebreaker was played. It was evident both she and the opponent were fighting for this title, but after a strategic combination of both aggressive and consistent hits, van Heemskerck Pillis captured the dominating trophy.
“Even though it was freezing cold, I was still able to play pretty good and win A draw singles,” van Heemskerck Pillis said.
Another exciting match was one of the lasts for the B draw bracket, played by two Warriors: Max Wolf ‘19 and Andrei Demkov ‘19. Though at times it can be stressful to watch and play games against fellow team members, this only goes to show how talented Warriors are by taking both of the top titles. The two played a close match, but eventually Wolf came in first.
Here is a list of all the winners from this tournament.
