Men’s Swim Team Blows Competition out of the Water

Gregory Raper ’16 breaks out for his 50 yard freestyle.

The state swim meet was a huge success for the Westwood men’s Swimming and Dive. They were able to secure three medals, one relay, and two individuals, which Westwood has never done before. The 200 yard medley placed second, swam by Preston Varozza ‘16, Adam Toler ‘16, Liam Tan ‘17, and Gregory Raper ‘16. Varozza will forever be in Westwood swimming history because he not only medaled in the relay, but he also medaled in two of his individual races — second place in 100 backstroke and third in 100 freestyle — giving him a total of three medals.

“Preston is a very memorable swimmer for me and I’ve been swimming with him since kindergarten. But his success has made me a really proud teammate this year,” Garrett Mott ‘16 said. “I’ve watched him from his sophomore year, where he was competing against the seniors, to succeeding as a top senior swimmer. For this year’s regional and state meet we named him The Goat (the greatest of all time). I feel that through all of his hard work he really deserved it.”

The state meet was a stressful meet for everyone that attended, ranging from the competition swimmers to the alternates to the fans. Even though he didn’t get to compete at state, Ryan Cain ‘17 was able to help out at the meet being an official timer. It allowed him to be on deck along with the state team which boosted the numbers of Westwood fans on deck.

“I got in trouble for cheering for Liam, because I was supposed to be focused on timing the other swimmers and being fair,” Ryan Cain ‘17 said. “But I don’t really care because I wanted to cheer for my teammate, so it was worth it.”

The meet was held at the University of Texas Aquatic Center which made it easier for friends and family to come and support the boys in their last season meet. The state meet was a good wrap up for the Warriors’ season where they placed first in the district, making it a consecutive six years of maintaining the title of District Champions.
