The varsity girls’ basketball game against Rouse began at a fast pace, scoring multiple baskets in the first few minutes in the game on Jan. 29. By the end of the first half, Rouse was leading by three points, but the varsity Lady Warriors pulled through with a victory in the 4th quarter with an end score of 58-52.

The game was looking bleak from the beginning with Rouse in almost nonstop possession of the ball, but in the fourth quarter, motivation picked back up and the Lady Warriors took control.

“At the very beginning they were scoring a bunch of 3s and it was really frustrating that we weren’t doing as well, but slowly we got better and it ended up well,” Kendall Krumme ‘16 said.

With less than a minute left in the game, everything was hectic. There was foul after foul as players tried to score points. In the frenzy to win the game, player #5 on our team, Sophie Taylor ‘16, was elbowed in the face and was on the ground before she was helped up and walked back to the bench. Only a few moments later, she jumped back into the game.

“It wasn’t on purpose, but yes, it did make me a little angry,” Sophie Taylor ‘16 said. “So sure, I felt a little more motivated.”

The Lady Warriors were having a tough time adapting to not having Coach Davalos there for the game. Coach Nelson had to coach the entire game, and while she knew the plays, her coaching style was something the girls were not used to.

“I think it affected the game it’s hard to play an entire season, or even a couple years with the same person, and then just switch over to someone else,” Madison Couch ‘17 said. “We did have to be more independent and I think it did affect the game a little bit. We brought in Coach Nelson, because she already knew a lot of our plays.”
