Girls’ Lacrosse Takes District Championship
The varsity girls’ lacrosse team won the District Championship on April 25, defeating Bowie High School at the Cedar Park High School football field. The final score was 7-6.
“Bowie interrupted our perfect season so it was important that we beat them,” Kayla Shay ‘18 said.
Emily Huttenhower ‘18 and Meghan Hettenhause ‘16 each scored a goal for Westwood in the first half. Despite two saves by goalie Shay, Bowie was able to score a total of 3 goals before the buzzer sounded, making the score 2-3 at halftime, favor of Bowie. In the second half, Huttenhower collided with a player from Bowie and had to be taken off the field due to resulting knee injuries. Westwood players claim to have fought harder for the title because of Huttenhower.
“It definitely brought the intensity up a lot and I believe they all really wanted to win for her and we did,” Head Coach Susan Killeavy said.
The second half ended 6-all and the game went into sudden-death overtime. Westwood gained control of the ball and made several unsuccessful goal attempts until Kaitlin McCall ‘17 made a penalty goal.
“It was stressful,” said Coach Killeavy, “but overall I believe that it was the best game this team has played this season.”
