On Aug. 31, the senior class gathered for a meeting and ice cream social. After helping themselves to ice cream, the class sat down and discussed and important topic topic: Homecoming.

“Homecoming is an important bonding event for all of the classes,” Class President Austin Huang ‘17 said. “As seniors, we should put some effort into our hallway and parade decorations to try and win the competition.”

Throughout the meeting, students came up with different ideas to use for both their Homecoming hallway decorations, as well as their class float, both of which will portray a 90’s theme. The conversation topics also drifted further into the year, touching on upcoming topics and events like prom and possible activities for PSAT day.

“Deciding what to do for the parade with our 90’s theme was fun,” Danielle Betancourt ‘17 said. “I’m excited for all of the events that we’re going to get to do, like the Homecoming parade and later, prom.”

The class officers ran the meeting themselves, bringing up ideas and letting students be involved in planning for hallway decorations and costumes, creating a running conversation between students and their class officers. The students decided to base their costumes off of 90’s TV shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Saved by the Bell, and are planning to incorporate fashion inspired by the cast into their own costumes.

“The cooperativeness and discussion during the meeting was nice, and we came up with some pretty good ideas,” Wesley Deguerre ‘17 said. “Also, the ice cream was nice.”

Students were also visited from Principal Mario Acosta, whom they serenaded with a rendition of Happy Birthday, as well as receiving some instruction and advice from Ms. Llanos-Gremillion, the Class of 2017 sponsor.

“It’s been quite interesting being their sponsor all four years,” Ms. Llanos-Gremillion said. “Every year I’ve worked with different individuals and a couple of them have stuck with me for two, maybe three years, so it’s nice to see how they have developed and matured over the years because there’s a big difference between freshman and seniors.”
