Moving fingers at lightening speed. Reading line after line of music. Stringing note after note together using only their voice. This is only a glimpse into the musical world at Westwood that takes up so many students lives.

Tri-M, which stands for Modern Music Makers, is a music honors society at Westwood that is dedicated to serving the community through music. The organization brings together members of the three main musical organizations at Westwood: band, orchestra, and choir.

“We plan to diversify our events this year,” Band Director Brittany Dacy said. “We hope to incorporate all aspects of the musical community.”

Last year, Tri-M had a rocky start due to a change in sponsors. Meetings did not start until the second semester, leading to a decrease in the amount of work it was able to do in the community. However this year the organization is hitting the ground running. The first meeting of the year was held Wednesday, Aug. 31. The group already has projects organized, one being a monthly performance at a retirement home.

“I hope to bring smiles to the faces of members of the community through music,” Vice President Natalie Bayer ‘17 said. “I also hope to help our members remember why they play or sing — for the joy of coming together and creating something special every time we perform.”

In order to be a part of Tri-M, students had to apply at the end of last year. The application included information on musical accomplishments and why each individual wanted to be a part of the organization. This year, there are 41 new members that will be inducted later on in the semester.

“I applied for Tri-M because I was curious about the work they did and wanted to share my passion for music with the community around me,” Drum Major James Yan ‘18 said.

In hopes of being more active this upcoming year, Tri-M will meet the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, a change from the previous monthly meetings.

“This year, I really want to encourage our members to go out and better our community through music,” President Rachel Horvit ‘17 said. “I am extremely excited to start working with these outstanding musicians and can’t wait to share our love of music with our community.”
