OPINION: New Clinton Email Investigation is Unwarranted
Five days away from the election and another bombshell hit the Clinton campaign concerning Hillary Clinton’s personal emails. This time, the FBI is investigating Anthony Weiner and the emails between him and his former wife, Huma Abedin (vice chairwoman for the Clinton Campaign), which can be seen as sharing classified information. Weiner has been surrounded by controversy after he sexted underage children. However, this investigation into Clinton and her emails is quickly becoming boring, especially since FBI Director James Comey released the vague information right before election day, November 8th. The FBI is wasting time trying to convict Clinton on the sharing of classified information when there are much better investigations to which they could be dedicating their time.
Comey held a press conference on October 28th announcing that they would be investigating the new emails found on Weiner’s account. Along with some minor details, that was all the information that the FBI director released. The new investigation seems vague and tiresome, especially considering they released the fact that they were performing the investigation before they even went through all of the emails. After years of these numerous investigations revealing no basis for a conviction, it seems suspicious now considering the timing of the investigation. Why not wait until after the election or until after the emails were evaluated to go through the emails? Plus, the emails are not even Clinton’s, which paints the FBI as an organization taking on political leaders instead of an organization that was put in place to help and serve the American people.
Another thing that bothers me is that as soon as new emails are discovered, the FBI decides to hold an in depth investigation, but when more than 10 women accused Donald Trump of sexual harassment, it is passed off as “locker room talk” with little investigation. These women lived in fear for years of speaking out against their harasser and as soon as they do, they were shot down and deemed liars. However, as soon as they uncover new emails, political leaders are eager to jump on the bandwagon to call Clinton a liar and a criminal, while her opponent has done much worse.
The election may not be rigged like Donald Trump is saying it is, but there is no doubt that the FBI has made a mistake in releasing this new information. Not only did it make the American people roll their eyes once again, it makes the FBI look like fools. Even if they do uncover something, it surely won’t be enough to convict Clinton. But the more likely fact is that they won’t uncover anything, and once again Clinton’s emails will be just seen as a mistake, and the American people will move on. Don’t let these trivial emails influence who you vote for, because in the end both candidates have made mistakes and we should acknowledge that and move on towards election day.
