‘The Maze Runner’ Series Puts a Twist on Action

December 15, 2016
I’ve been interested in reading The Maze Runner ever since I saw people in my school and my friends reading it. In fact, it actually sat on my bookshelf for about a year, but now I wish I had read it earlier.
The Maze Runner was a story that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did. When I finished reading the book, I desperately wished that I had the sequel, because I wanted to continue reading immediately.
I had never read a story like this. At first I thought it would be like all the other action/adventure books coming out trying to mimic Harry Potter or the Divergent series. So my expectations began pretty low, but that quickly changed after reading the first book of this series. Everything that author James Dashner threw at you was shocking around every corner, so you just had to accept what happened (even though on the inside you’re saying “no, no, no…”).
Many people, including my dad, wondered if I would like a book like this because of the violence, monsters and gruesome scenes it included. But I love books like that because they are never boring, and that is exactly what this series was. I admit there was death and violence and sometimes I cringed. However, I couldn’t get enough of this series; it was as if I could not read them fast enough.
Every event that happened was better than the previous one. Right when I thought it couldn’t get any more intense or surprising, I was proven wrong every time. I could not predict one thing that happened because each event carried a shocking surprise with it.
You would think that Dashner couldn’t possibly have anything worse planned for Thomas, the main character of the story, but something always happened. There were some horrifying parts, but the books would not have been the same without them. The story got better and better in each book. I had no idea what I was getting into, and now that I’ve read through the series I know that the story was so much bigger than just a place the characters were trapped in, the Maze.
The layout of the story was very well designed. I was also extremely pleased that they made movies out of them. I highly suggest reading the books then going to see the movies, because the book gives you the story and background, while the movie portrays it perfectly.
The very end of The Death Cure, the third book, left me speechless. Dashner knew how to create an emotional end. Not every question was answered, and although that may be frustrating, it was for the best. Everyone likes a little mystery, and as the reader you are able to imagine your own answers the way you want them to be answered. The series was intense and fantastic, it was very well thought out. The story progressed at such a quick pace that you couldn’t catch your breath; there weren’t time for breaks. I was surprised at what was happening during the entire series, and I couldn’t stop reading. I was very impressed by Dashner’s creativity and brave ideas all throughout each book. The Maze Runner was intriguing, The Scorch Trials was unbelievable, and The Death Cure made for an unforgettable ending.
