The JV girls’ basketball team brought home another victory against the Pflugerville Panthers on Tuesday Jan.17 and finished the game with a slim lead of 59-52.

“Going into this game I was kind of nervous, but excited I knew it was going to be a really good game,” Kooper Giles ‘20 said. “ We were missing a couple players going into it to that brought down our level of play.”

At the start of the first quarter, the Warriors won the tip off and dribbled the ball up the court, acquiring the first two points of the game with free throws shot by Makayla Coy ‘19. The teamwork and passing shown during this quarter allowed the girls to have many opportunities to score. With strong offensive plays in this quarter, the Panthers call a timeout when the score was at 14-2, but the Warriors kept playing strong to end the quarter in the lead at 16-3.

Points began to get racked up by numerous layups from Giles throughout the second quarter. Although the Warriors allowed the Panthers to gain points through fouls, the Warriors still took an 18 point lead by halftime with a score of 36-18.

“I was out for 8 weeks since I broke my wrist and this was my first home game back” says Izzy Barber ‘19. “We have won against Pflugerville in the past so we came into the game cocky and not as scared as we were the first time we played them.”

Coming back from half, the Panthers came out strong acquiring the first points of the game through a three pointer, and the Warriors knew they would have to step it up to win this game. The Panthers began to catch up to the Warriors by sinking multiple threes, but the Warriors managed to stay ahead by a small margin with a score of 41-38 at the end of the third.

“Overall we’ve had better games, but as a team I don’t think we we’re working as well together because we weren’t taking coachs’ initiative, but we pulled it off in the end,” Barber said.

The last quarter begins with Coy receiving a pass from her teammate Annalise Galliguez ‘20 and dribbles past four of the Panthers players and throws up the ball for a lay up acquiring the first two points. Both teams picked up their game as the Warriors lead begins to slow down, but the girls dominated the last minutes in the final quarter and were able to gain another win ending the game with a final score of 59-52.
