Beauty and the Beast Falls Short of Becoming Monster Hit
Beauty and The Beast is a classic Disney princess movie and is one of the newest films to have a live-action remake. While many people were concerned with Disney’s choice for this film, it’s safe to say that it has lived up to the enormous shadow of the original animated version. Beauty and The Beast takes a simple Disney movie and puts a twist on it, giving the movie immense depth and creating a new world right before your eyes.
While the plot follows that of the original animated movie, there are several differences. We get insight into not only Belle’s backstory but also the Beast’s and Gaston’s. It gives a whole new side to each character, and everything isn’t black and white. But while the plot enhanced the movie, sometimes it felt like there was too much going on at one time. The plot could be confusing and sometimes it felt like the movie itself was lost. The producers tried to pack too much into this movie, and while it helped in some areas, it hurt the movie in others. For instance, while we did get explanation on some of the characters backstories, other characters had little to no expansion on their past at all. Also, some of the main storyline was lost because of the focus on specific characters, and it sometimes left me wondering what was going on. Even though it could be confusing at times, the film still created a wonderful story with very good characters.
A key element of every Disney movie is the music. The songs make the films come to life and give that extra dash of magic. But Beauty and the Beast’s soundtrack only had a few songs that really hit for me. Despite having an entire cast of people who’ve been on Broadway, it seemed like the main character was very Auto-Tuned. Every time Belle sang, it sounded overly edited, in contrast to the other characters, who had emotion and a natural feeling in their voices.
One of the most stunning parts of the movie was the appearance of the film overall. The computer-generated imagery (CGI), like the furniture and the Beast, looked very realistic and was visually appealing on screen. Be Our Guest was so vivid and colorful, and was one of the highlights of the movie. The castle and town look straight out of 1600s France, and most of the costumes fit the period well, except for Belle’s dress in the ballroom scene. Her dress was disappointing and lacked a certain grandeur that it should’ve had. It didn’t shock the audience or make them gasp at how beautiful it was. Her ball gown looked flat and boring, while every other costume was beautifully crafted.
Overall, Beauty and The Beast was average. It was a pretty good movie with a really good soundtrack, but there were just a few disappointing points. It’s hard to live up to the Disney classics, and I think this film did a good job. Even though some parts of the film were not as great for me, I think that it’s still worth going to see it. The beauty of the film comes to life on the screen, and keeps that amazing Disney magic.
