A volleyball matchup between the Round Rock Dragons and Lady Warriors took place on Sept. 26, but led to a heartbreaking loss for the JV White team. The girls had a home advantage, but lost in two sets. Even when faced with this adversity, the team did not shy from their mistakes and made the Dragons fight until the very last point.

The first set started for the Warriors when Chloe Rech ‘21 tipped the ball right over the net, gaining the Warriors a point and putting the team on the board. Round Rock showed consistent serving, but did not falter the Warriors’ vocalization and teamwork. The girls began to recover from several missed passes on a serve, but didn’t recuperate fast enough to win the first set, ending at 25-18. Lauren Wood ‘21 spoke of her anxiety and the importance of this match.

“I was particularly nervous going into the game because all my friends play for Round Rock,” Wood said. “I went to middle school with them before I transferred, so it was good that we did well with serve-receive and our passes. We just needed to work on our communication.”

The girls put points on the board in the second set, working hard to catch up to Round Rock’s set lead. Wood passed perfect balls to setter Samantha Snow ‘21, and scored several points with a deep cross shot. Sara Sagues ‘21 served an ace with a deep float to the back of the court, but the Warriors were still down 13-9. Abby Brueck ‘20 saved a short ball on serve-receive that made the crowd’s cheer echo in the gym. Hitters communicated effectively, preventing collisions on the court. The score read 19-10 as the team shuffled to regain momentum, but only gained three points, ending the set 25-13.

“Our defense wasn’t the best today,” Sagues said. “We weren’t communicating or reacting fast enough, but we has more energy and positivity when we did something good.”

The Lady Warrior JV White team will be playing again on Friday, Sept. 29 against Hendrickson at Westwood.
