Without a large crowd to back them up, the Lady Warriors varsity volleyball team was still able to defeat the Hutto Hippos for a well deserved 3-0 win on Friday, Sept. 22.

“I think it was a really important win to have and a really good confidence booster to have going into next week,” varsity volleyball coach Tara Nelson said.

With their confidence already high from their last Hutto victory, which was also a 3-0 win, the Lady Warriors swiftly secured the first point of the game by taking advantage of the Hippos’ errors, and remained focused and strong as the points began to pile up in Westwood’s favor. By the end of the first set, the Lady Warriors led 25-15, and it seemed clear Hutto was once again at a loss against the Lady Warriors.

The second set began with Hutto scoring the first point, but their lead was short-lived as the Lady Warriors began scoring point after point to maintain another quick victory with a final score of 25-17.

Hutto tried to retake the game in the third set, consistently scoring in order to keep Westwood behind, but their lead would not last long. Even though the Lady Warriors had just barely gotten the score tied again (19-19) after a long neck-and-neck battle, Maggie Stout ‘19 came alive and made two perfectly placed hits to push her team past Hutto’s lead and into the path to victory.

And so, without hesitation, the Lady Warriors landed the final points and finished their final set 25-21.

“I’m proud of my team for winning in three (sets),” Abi Rucker ‘20 said. “And even though our crowd wasn’t that big, we still brought a lot of energy and won.”

With another Hutto victory secured under their belt, the Lady Warriors are ready to take this important practice and turn it towards a district win the next game, which is Friday Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. against Hendrickson at the Pflugerville District Stadium.
