Over 900 German students competed at the annual state tournament this weekend, placing 3rd place in Sweepstakes as well as scoring skillfully in individual and group events and projects. Westwood had already placed first in the regional tournament in events which were from levels one to four based on the language experiences of the students involved. The top five students in each event from the regional tournament were eligible to compete at the state tournament at Texas State University. Canyon Vista Middle School and Grisham Middle School placed third place in small schools and ninth place in large schools respectively.

“We got first place at regionals and going to state, of course, it’s the top five from the three different regions going and so getting third place for large schools, I think is fantastic,” Jennifer Melgar said. “Especially when we’re behind schools like Kingwood and Bellaire from the Houston area and Bellaire being a magnet school for specifically foreign languages, I think that just shows how fantastic our kids are.”
