The Case That Captivated The Nation, Gabby Petito’s Pre-marital Murder
As of Tuesday, Sept. 21, the remains of a 22-year-old long island woman were found near Grand Teton National Park. These remains came as a startling update in the case of Gabby Petito, a Bluepoint woman whose odd posts, sketchy fiance, and influencer lifestyle took the media by storm in late August.
This investigation gained popularity on TikTok, causing an uproar of conspiracy theories and tips to surface regarding the whereabouts of Petito. The last place she was confirmed on videotape to be alive was a hotel in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, August 24. A witness later came out and said that she saw Petito and her fiance in a verbal altercation outside a Mexican food restaurant. Following this dispute, communication with her family became cryptic and sparse. Petito’s mother reports the final text message she received from her 22-year-old daughter was “no service in Yosemite,” a text that she said was quite out of character for her.
Given the circumstances of her case, theories were quick to emerge. The most popular theory being that her fiance, Brian Laundrie, murdered her in a fit of rage. It is currently impossible to prove or disprove this theory as the police have been unable to contact Laundrie and get a statement. However, a new piece of evidence has been released to suggest her killing could have been a killing of passion.
Typically, when dealing with a serial killer or someone who is generally out to hurt at random, the perpetrator has a weapon and is familiar with using it. In the case of Petito, the police concluded that her cause of death was strangulation, which is typically done by someone who has a more personal connection to the victim. It’s a personal offense.
Given this information, it became clear to many people that this wasn’t a “who did it” but a “why they did it it” type of case. The FBI has yet to conclude that Laundrie was the perpetrator, but for most, there is no doubt he is the killer.
One of the other theories that circulated and was later disproved was that Petito was pregnant. Her autopsy was released by the coroner’s office on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and included in the report was a note stating that Petito was not pregnant at the time of her death.
The motive for Petito’s murder was widely suspected to be domestic abuse. All over the nation, outrage over the law enforcement’s failure to stop the domestic dispute that most likely led to Petito’s death has been almost palpable. There is a sense that much more could have been done to prevent the situation from escalating.
As of Wednesday, Oct. 20, human remains were found in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. Due to many context clues including the location of the remains, authorities immediately suspected it to be the remains of Brian Laundrie. The following day, the remains were confirmed to be Brian’s using dental records. For possible updates, follow Florida FBI on Twitter, @FBITAMPA.
