Zach Engels ’22 waits for a rebound in the varsity game against Hutto.

On Jan. 25, 2022, varsity basketball (7-1) beat the Hutto Hippos (1-7) at home with sheer hustle and hard work, 46-42. The Warriors have a tough schedule ahead of them, including the Round Rock Dragons, who is the Warriors only loss.  Zach Engels ’22 contributed multiple threes that kept Westwood in the game.

With 11 seconds on the clock, Carson King ‘22 drew a foul and was sent to the line. The Warriors were up by two before the free throws. King hit the front rim on each shot, but both of them went in, sealing the win.

“A few of my shots didn’t fall but I can’t let that get in my head, and I hit two free throws at the end to seal the game,” King said.

As time expired, Engels had another two free throw shots. There was only half a second left in the game when Engels splashed both of his free throws, ensuring the victory.

The Warriors were thrilled to come away with the victory and they hope to secure their first district championship in 20 years. The team jumped and yelled in excitement after a hard-fought victory.

“It was a scrappy game, you know, we had to fight hard to win. We did what we needed to to get the win,” King said. “We play Round Rock on Friday and it’s a big game, it may decide who the district champion is in the end.”

The Warriors face off against the Round Rock Dragons on Jan. 28 at Round Rock High School.
