Westwood Waterpolo team boys gather for team photo together after day long tournament. This is Westwood water polos first year as a UIL sport. The tournament took place August

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Boys’ Waterpolo team took down Vandegrift. The team was led by Freddy Browarski ‘24, who scored a season-high of nine goals. The team mounted a comeback in the second half to continue the undefeated season.

“It was a solid game,” Browarski said. “I got a bit worried in the first half but we came back in the second half. [It was a] good play by our captains.”

Jack Beneviste ‘24 and Alex Millan ‘24 both made contributions in the game. Beneviste had five goals, and Millan added on four goals. The duo’s chemistry was off the charts, as they played together for the past few years.

“I think we played well, we really worked well as a team,” Millan said. “In the second quarter, I broke my finger. The rest of my team was able to step it up and secure us the win.”

Coach Matthew McBrearty made a big adjustment at halftime to move Cole Osborn ‘25 to goalie, and Beneviste to an offensive player. It turned out to be a great move, as Osborn stopped several shots and Beneviste scored many goals. The final score of the game was 19-14, with Westwood pulling out the win.

“We’ve got two great goalies, but we needed some extra offense and Jack has that to offer,” Coach McBrearty said. “It was a good way to generate some offense and not lose anything in the goal.”

The team looks forward to their next tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the RRISD Aquatic Center on the Cedar Ridge campus.
