Socializing before the start of the first general meeting, Spanish Honor Society members talk amongst themselves. In addition to receiving information concerning upcoming events, students were introduced to the new leadership team, composed of five student officers.

Welcoming back returning members, Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, or SHH) held their first general meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Led by the new officer team, attendees received information concerning upcoming projects and service opportunities. As part of the organization’s goals of reintroducing successful events from past years, a greater emphasis will be placed on facilitating member growth in language immersion and application.

“New initiatives and events can help our members become more comfortable with speaking Spanish,” SHH President Joanna Lin ‘23 said. “By learning more about Hispanic culture, our members can grow to appreciate it even more, and hopefully continue in their language acquisition skills, [contributing] to Hispanic programs and organizations around Austin even after their time in SHH is over.”

Such goals to increase community engagement are reflected in opportunities such as a teacher lunch scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27, wherein students are invited to practice Spanish speaking skills to converse and interact with a teacher of their choice. Other activities throughout the year come in the form of discussion-based exercises held during Fun Friday Flex, and organization-wide functions, the first of which—a popsicle social—will be held on Friday, Sept. 30.

“[SHH] keeps my interests in [Spanish], like games played at general meetings. There are lots of good volunteer opportunities,” SHH member Kristine Chung ‘23 said.

The next SHH general meeting is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5. More information on the organization can be found on their website.
