Freshman Girls Basketball Dominates Court in First District Game
The freshman girls’ basketball team played an impressive game against the Manor Mustangs on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Manor High School. The Lady Warriors won with an impressive 58-35, defeating the Lady Mustangs and winning their first district game.
Westwood won the tipoff, and the first quarter was a very tight game, with Ali Hight scoring and tying the game 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Warriors continued to score throughout the first half and finished the end of the second quarter ahead of Manor, 26-21.
“This was a really good game, because we had worked on pushing the ball across the court and I think we definitely did that,” Athena Skevofilax ‘26 said.
The Lady Warriors’ lead only grew in the second half with an impressive series of 6 scores in a row, bringing the score to 44-24 by the end of the third quarter.
“I feel like we’re only going to go up,” Coach Jennifer Scazzero said. “There were a lot of good things I saw [in this game]. We’ve been working on a couple of very specific things in practice, and I saw them put it into effect.”
Westwood continued to score in the final quarter, maintaining a significant lead despite Manor’s best efforts. With continuous scores and free throw points, the Lady Warriors triumphed over the Lady Mustangs, 58-35.
“It was our first district game, and it was a really good game,” Skevofilax said. “The most rewarding part is just making baskets and my parents being proud of me, because my mom and dad are on the court, always cheering me on. I love having them happy for my success. It’s [also] very rewarding to see my friends score, because it’s just exciting to win as a team.”
The Lady Warriors will play against Vandegrift on Friday, Dec. 16, at Westwood.
