Crafting cards to the vibrant rhythms of Latin pop, Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, or SHH) held an after-school teacher and custodian appreciation event on Thursday, Feb. 23. Students paired handwritten thank-yous with small treat bags, gifting them to the language department and custodial staff.

“I thought honoring custodians was really important, because I know that there are very few in the school right now,” Rainey Hajmasy ‘24 said. “It’s fun to use my Spanish in a real-life situation.”

Taking time to reflect on their gratitude for various faculty and staff, students wrote personalized messages for each recipient, which proved more meaningful as a group activity. SHH officers also selected items such as gourmet chocolates, pens, and memo pads to include in each bag.

“The little notes—those are the ones that we as teachers truly appreciate,” SHH Sponsor Señora Milybett Llanos said. “The message that [students can] convey with this small token of appreciation is much more important and hits the heart.”

Alongside an ongoing school supply drive for underprivileged Honduran students, SHH events continue to connect organization membership to service and community engagement. The next Spanish Honor Society meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 8.
