Dance Showcases Momentum at Annual Escapade Performance

Music escalating to a crescendo pairs with graceful movements, depicting a scene of self-expression and elegance. On Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, the Dance Department showcased their dances during the SunDancer-hosted spring show, Escapade.

SunDancers began practicing for Escapade after contest season in February, and most of the combinations they learned were new. Warrior Pride began rehearsing their Escapade dance before their contest season, giving their team of 43 dancers adequate time to perfect their routines before the show.

“It was actually a really short time [to learn our new dances],” SunDancer Isabella Shi ‘25 said. “Some of our dances were from our competition so they were already clean, but there were a lot of changes made for the new stage.”

This year’s escapade theme was Momentum, representing how with momentum, something will continue moving forward on its own.

“I think this year’s theme was especially meaningful,” Warrior Pride member Cheyenne Wang ‘25 said. “Even in times of distress, because as a team we are each other’s momentum, we can continue to persevere.”

Captivating the audience, SunDancer “Newbies” performed as part of the drill team for the first time.

“Being a ‘Newbie’ represents ‘I’m almost gonna be a SunDancer’, which is really exciting” SunDancer Bailey Zhang ‘25 said. “I look forward to all the events and performances I’m gonna have with the team as well as being able to spend time in this cohesive environment with people who are all passionate about dance.”

Among the dance classes, Cheer also performed.

“I’m really proud of everyone for stepping up and putting themselves outside of their comfort zones to try new things,” Cheerleader Awa-Susan Currier ‘25 said. “Cheer can be really dangerous and I hope everyone recognizes the work that we put in as individuals.”

Escapade holds a deeper meaning for many Dancers, representing an end to the season.

“There certainly is a lot of sentimental value, because it’s the last thing we do as a team,” Shi said. “This is the last time we’re performing as a team together, this specific team, and it will never be the same, so there is a lot of crying, especially with our seniors during our dance.”
