Fighting through adversity until the very end, the Freshmen volleyball team fell to Westlake 2-0 Friday Aug. 25, on their home court.
The Warriors started the first set quick to score, notching two points with strong serves from Delaney Selfridge ‘27. However, they struggled to maintain their early lead as Westlake matched them with two points of their own, tying the game at 2-2 with serves to unguarded places on the Warrior’s side.
“I feel like we could have worked a lot better on covering the short balls,” Emily Rice ‘27 said. “We were really in our heads and didn’t play up to our normal stamina. We didn’t really communicate at all.”
Even though the team didn’t come out on top this time, the players know what they want to work on in upcoming practices to improve, most of them with dreams of joining the varsity volleyball team in the future.
“We could have done better but we’re gonna work on it,” Chiara Kanazawa ‘27 said. “This year, our goal is to win district, and I hope to make Varsity someday.”
The girls put all their effort out onto the field and are constantly looking to improve and get better. Even with a loss, the only thing on their mind is to improving, work harder and win the next game.
“The girls are awesome,” Coach Paul Thailing said. “They work really hard and are really coachable, they’ve been growing really well and getting there and getting better and it’s been really fun to watch. I really just want to see us continue to do a good job communicating, giving great effort, getting our serves in, and putting pressure.”
The Lady Warriors will play again Tuesday Aug. 29 at 6:30 against Lake Travis on the road.
