Soaking in vibrant animation and upbeat songs, National Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, or SHH) members took part in a “Noche de Cine” on Thursday, April 25. The movie night was the organization’s final event of the year, with officers planning ahead of time to pull it off successfully.
“Usually before every month, we have a meeting with all of our officers,” SHH president Sanam Talreja ‘24 said. “We plan out who is going to send out emails and who’s making the spreadsheet for the food. We like to divide and conquer to get things done so we have everything we need to execute the event.”
The movie “Vivo” was played, an animated musical featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie explored themes of Latin culture, family, loss, and love.
“This event was actually supposed to happen a couple of months ago,” SHH Vice President Ami Dave ‘24 said. “Afro-Latino history was something that was prominent in the month that we were supposed to have this event, so we chose this movie because it revolves around that theme.”
After the movie, members took part in a conversation over their favorite elements of the film. Talreja then read a Spanish poem entitled “Balada de los dos Abuelos” and discussed ideas in the poem that related to those in the movie.
“I think it was really good how a lot of students picked up on what the poem was talking about and kind of understood the connection with the movie in terms of how music brings people together,” Talreja said. “One of our members shared that music is the universal language and I thought that was a really nice way of putting it.”
