In an effort to strengthen the bonds amongst those within the robotics community, as well as all over the school, the Robotics Club held its annual boba social on Thursday, Sept. 12. The club served an assortment of flavors, ranging from brown sugar, matcha, and taro, with tapioca pearls as a topping. The club sold drinks for six dollars per drink and 10 dollars for two, catering both the tea and pearls from Sharetea.
“Our goal was to more or less bring people together in this community and bring awareness that robotics is a great community to be a part of,” Robotics Club Event Director Iris Chen ‘26 said. “[We also wanted to] sell some boba and make some people happy.”
The Robotics Club has been hosting the boba social for over three years, but due to organizational changes such as the departure of former club sponsor Mr. Bailey Hulsey, club officers had to adapt and change the structure of the event to better suit the needs of this year.
“We initially started with 250 cups,” said Chen. “[We] eventually lowered it to 100 because we didn’t want to have leftovers.”
Additionally, the social was hosted on a weekday rather than a weekend, allowing it to reach students outside of the club rather than restricting its customers to robotics members attending weekend practice.
“A lot more people came and bought boba so that was great to see,” Chen said. “I think it was pretty successful.”
All in all, the Robotics Club strove to spread the boba cheer, and give students a much needed break, whether it was from working on robots, or just academics in general.
“We want to help people in robotics have a stronger bond with each other,” Chen said. “[It’s about creating] the family aspect of a community that’s able to reside in such a teamwork-based [sport] in which we work on our robots and with our team.”
The Westwood Robotics FTC teams will compete in their first competition hosted at Westwood on Saturday, Oct. 26, and the FRC team, Orange Dynamite, will compete at their annual off-season competition, the North Texas Tournament of Robots (NTX), on Saturday, Sept. 28.
