For their second home game of the season, the JV boys basketball team faced the Anderson Trojans on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Eventually winning 60-34, the Warriors’ fast paced playing style and solid defense was no match for the Trojans.
Within their first five minutes the Warriors drained three baskets, bringing them up six. However, the Trojans didn’t wait to respond, as they scored six points of their own soon after. Liam Beekman ‘27, matching their play with a layup left the score at 8-6 with the warriors up. Beekman, continuing his streak, scored another layup. Going back to back to finish the quarter, the Warriors focused on their defense, stealing the ball to prevent any further points. This defense-first playstyle brought the game 14-9 after multiple rebounds from Marshall Sjariffudin ‘27 ended the quarter .
“I was quite happy that we did really well in the second half defensively and only let in 8 points,” Beekman said.
Going into the second quarter the Trojans tried to close the gap, starting with a two pointer. Continuing Anderson’s run, they scored 5 more points, almost evening the score as Warriors remained in the lead with a score of 19-18.
“I did better and better as the game progressed,” Sjariffudin said. “In the first half, as a team, we were kind of lacking, and so after our coach gave us a speech during halftime in the locker room, I kinda came out with a new mindset”
After the half the Warriors’ communication and coordination improved, increasing the effectiveness of defense and offense. This is evident as the Warriors started racking up points. The Trojans, not being able to match the Warriors ended the third quarter down, 47-26
“During the match, we played very aggressive, we played smart on offense, and we were just running our plays on defense, we were also getting a lot of steals and trying to focus on getting more rebounds.” Charlie King ‘27 said.
As the Warriors maintained their fast-paced defense, the Trojans made an attempt at the lead. But the Trojans’ effort failed to break up the Warriors’ momentum. The Warriors made successful steals which helped plunge forward their lead. Beekman got a steal on their inbound, leading to a three pointer. The Trojans’ offensive is able to score some points here and there, but not enough to make a dent on the scoreboard. The Warriors’ defense was not letting up, and was making proficient plays. The game ends with a score of 60-34.
“I was quite happy that we did really well in the second half defensively and only let in 8 points in the third quarter and then 6 in the fourth. I was proud of my performance and everyone else on the team” Beekman said.
JV will play their next game on Friday Nov. 22, at Glenn High School to catch their next win.
