In the spirit of giving thanks and expressing gratitude, Student Council (StuCo) hosted a series of service events throughout November to uniquely give back to the community. With dedicated planning and focused advertising of the events, StuCo was able to contribute to making a warm impact on the local community.
Kicking off the monthly series of events, StuCo hosted the Teacher Appreciation (TAPP) Committee’s Bracelet Making event, hosted during flex time on Friday, Nov. 15.
“It seemed like a relaxing flex that day,” Junior Class Treasurer Iris Chen said. “I didn’t have much going on so it was a nice time to relax and make bracelets.”
In an effort to craft quality bracelets, a team of 13 students worked together to create more than 20 mini-gifts for the teachers. The following day, the TAPP Committee distributed these bracelets to the administrative staff to appreciate their efforts in running and managing the school.
“I think it’s just nice to be able to sit down and do something other than school[work],” Chen said. “It’s just kinda a piece of yourself that you are giving to the community.”
Continuing the theme of giving back to the community, StuCo’s Community Service Committee made DIY Thanksgiving-themed placemats on Tuesday, Nov. 19 to donate to the non-profit organization, Meals on Wheels. The organization would then distribute these placemats, along with warmly cooked Thanksgiving meals, to senior citizens in the local vicinity.
“We wanted to make Thanksgiving dinner a little bit extra special for some of the people who will be receiving meals from Meals on Wheels,” Junior Class Parliamentarian Aiden Wen said. “[Volunteering] makes me feel like I’m contributing to the community, not just [being] part of the community.”
Culminating their series of community service events, StuCo’s Health and Environment Committee sought to encourage students to give back to the environment by making eco-friendly pinecone bird seed feeders. On Thursday, Nov. 21, volunteers took the birdseed feeders home in hopes of providing food for animals living in their backyard this winter.
“This event is about combining the Thanksgiving giving mood as well as being environmentally conscious,” Executive Vice President Josie Sun ‘26 said. “Student Council [believes that] volunteering is a good way to demonstrate that we want to benefit other people even if we’re not necessarily benefiting ourselves.”
StuCo will be hosting a Candy Grams fundraiser from Monday, Dec. 2 to Friday, Dec. 6.
