Taking the game into extra innings on Friday, March 1, the varsity softball team competed against the Vandegrift Vipers in their second home game of the season. Despite their tough fight, the Warriors lost 10-7.
Beginning the first inning, Vandergrift scored a quick first run, putting the first point of the game on the board; this was followed by a ground out to short-stop by the Vipers. In attempts to take the lead, the Warriors had a strong hit from Chloe Deluna ‘26 which sent Kendall Brothers ‘27 home putting a matching run on the board for the Warriors.
¨The dugout energy was really good and everyone cheering really helped us [in the game],¨ Abby Thailing ’26 said
The second inning began with a strike out from the Warriors’ home run hitter, Clare Guidry ’27. However, striking back against the Vipers, the Warriors ended the Vipers’ pitching streak with a line drive straight into center field. With Vandergrift’s strong defense and pitches they shut down the Warriors and struck many of them out, tagging out the rest. This pattern of outs and long at bats continued through the sixth inning.
We kept our momentum [due to] our determination in the game and we played with everything we had,¨ Haley Boling ‘26 said.
Starting off the seventh inning the Vandegrift was ahead 7-6 and the Warriors turned up the heat in an effort to surpass them. Ending the intense inning, Aleni Alvarez ’28 stole home to tie the score at 7-7, evening the playing field leading to an overtime game.
With tensions high and a win on the line for both teams everyone was on their A game. Vandergrift had the at bat first and jammed in four runs through the inning after reading the Warriors’ pitching pattern, putting the Vipers in a 10-7 lead.
¨Our mindset switched to more competitive because we knew what we had to do in order to win. I feel like we were really focused on the little details of everything and making sure we didn’t mess up,¨ Guidry said.¨Even though we did lose, it was a good game overall,¨.
