Kicking off their third week of their first season, on Wednesday, May 14., the girls flag football team dominated the Pflugerville Panthers 31-21.Through their first game, the Warriors set expectations for a bit of an offensive throwdown against the Wolves with high point scoring and consistent point after conversions.
“Our first game was a little bit of an offensive battle,” Coach Thaling said. “The kids battled and we took care of business, so that’s the most important part.”
Moving into the first half, the Warriors started off at a deficit. With two squandered offensive drives ending with an interception, the Warriors were soon down 6-0 after a quick touchdown by the Wolves. However, due to a failed point after attempt, the Warriors were still in striking distance. In an attempt to capitalize on the remainder of their time in the half, the Warriors focused on midfield passes and fast, unexpected runs to the left. However, shortly after a turnover on downs put the Warriors at risk of a deeper loss to the Panthers. But the Warrior defense would not let it happen, forcing a turnover on downs before the Panthers’ 50 gave the Warriors a final chance to catch up this half. With time dwindling down, the Warriors pushed with quick runs, ending their drive with a pass to Audrey Savoie ‘26
and a simple pass for the point after, the Warriors were up 8-6 going into halftime.
“It felt great really, the play was set up perfectly,” Savoie said. “We really haven’t practiced that one, but it was in the playbook so we just ran it and it looked great.”
The game still stayed competitive moving into the second half as the Panthers’ star running back found the outside lane, scoring in the first moments of the half and giving the Wolves the lead at 12-8. Setting up momentum for the Warriors, Kimmie Menendez ‘27 put the Warriors in the red zone with a deep run the very next play. This advancement ended in a flag guarding penalty, this gave the Warriors the opportunity to close out the game. But, after a fumble in the backfield and a dropped pass in the endzone, a pivotal third down conversion arose. However, with another pass to Savoie, Abby Thaling ‘26 reinstated the Warriors’ lead 16-12, holding it until the end of the game.
“We knew that Weiss was one of the better teams in this league,” Coach Thaling said. “We knew it was gonna be a challenge for the girls, but we responded well and got the win.”
This win set the Warriors 4-2 on a four game win streak moving into the playoffs on Wednesday, May 21., where the Warriors look to make it deep, setting their first year of girls flag football off with a success.
