In a defensive showoff from both teams, the newly founded girls flag football team shut out the Hutto Hippos 12-0 on Wednesday, May 8. in their fourth game of the season. Following the two losses from the past week, this win was electric for the team. Throughout the game, the Warriors’ pass heavy offense created space to drive wherever Hutto would let up.
“All we expected was to do better than we did last week.” Abby Thailing ‘26 said. “We lost both games against McNeil and Round Rock, so we just wanted the win.”
As the game started both teams sought to find their footing, testing the waters to see what strategy would work best. The Warriors began their pass game with short passes focused on finding openings through the Hutto defense. But, the Warrior offense was not the only thing keeping the Hippos on their toes as a goal line stand and two more caused turnovers kept Hutto from getting on the board, eventually ending the half 0-0 with the Warriors picking up steam.
“I have played flag football before, in eighth grade,” Paige Price ‘27 said. “It was a little event where the boys played volleyball and the girls played football and I enjoyed it then.”
Moving into the second half the Warriors found their gameplay as the half started with a long pass downfield that drew out a penalty against Hutto, putting them in the red zone. Now at risk of giving up points, the Hippos tried to lock down any yardage from the Warriors fruitlessly as a pass to Audrey Savoie ‘26 in the end zone put the Warriors on the board. Following a failed point after attempt, the Warriors stayed up 6-0. As Hutto regained control of the ball, they tried to switch up their playstyle attempting to stop the pass rush from Esa Windwillow. But the Warriors did not let that stop them as a quick four-and-out gave the Warriors the ball back. The Warriors could not be stopped as a first down play and a shot down field quickly threw the Warriors back in the red zone. Continuing their red zone tradition, a target to Paige Price ‘27 put the Warriors up 12-0 to set the final score.
“My favorite way to play is just getting the ball to all my receivers and letting them score,” Thaling said.
The Warriors will play their next games against the Pflugerville Panthers and the Weiss Wolves on Wednesday, May 14. for their last games of the regular season before the playoff games on Wednesday, May 21. where the Warriors look to go far.
