Refugee Crisis Continues to Escalate in Europe

Recent controversy over the Refugee Crisis in Europe has brought the inhumane conditions to the public.

Asylum seekers coming in, mainly from Syria, are refused at a bus stop in Bicske, Hungary because none of the buses would drive to the refugee camps. Even after buying their expensive tickets, some 500 of the refugees and migrants were forced to walk over 110 miles to Austria, to try to find a camp that will take them in.

Sadly many camps are full or won’t take any more people in, so the desperate are taking boats to Australia. Prime minister, Tony Abbott, wants nothing to do with the crisis, going as far as saying:

“Australia will do absolutely nothing that gives any encouragement to anyone to think that they can get on a boat, that they can work with people smugglers to start a new life.”

He’s ordered the Australian Army to keep out any boats that try to come bearing refugees so that no more than 8,000 will be settled in Australia.

Meanwhile, near the town of Roszke, Hungary, migrants and refugees – mostly Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan – broke through police lines at a holding camp. They claimed the camps were unsafe and the conditions were uncomfortable. After escaping, the group split into two smaller groups. One of the groups was caught a few days later by Hungarian police, brought food and water, and told they had no choice but to trust the Hungarian authorities. Members of the returning group have expressed concerns that they will be stuck in the Hungary camps and never make it to their final destination in Western Europe. The other group, yet to be brought back to Hungary, hopes to make it Germany by train or bus.

The public wonders why these refugees and migrants are not receiving warmer welcomes, or are not getting all the help they need. The only UN country that seems to be primarily concerned with humanitarian aid – rather than economical stability – is Turkey, which has taken in 1.1 million of the 12 million recorded refugees.
