The world’s second biggest diamond, found in Botswana, added about $150 million to the value of Lucara Diamond Crop. (LUCRF) at 1,111 carats.
It has the biggest gem value to be found in over one hundred years, and is too big for Lucara’s own scanner, meaning it will probably be sent to the world’s diamond polishing market in Antwerp, Belgium to be assessed.
Lucara owns and operates the mine the diamond was found in, which has been up and running since 2012. Two other “exceptional” white diamonds, estimated at 813 carats and 374 carats, have previously been found at the same mine.
The diamond discovery wiped out almost all of the 26% losses the company had been suffering due to unprecedented finds.
The largest diamond ever to be discovered was the 3,106-carat, “Cullinan stone” found in South Africa in 1905, and it’s first cut “First Star of Africa” now adorns the Royal Scepter.
