The Lady Warriors went head-to-head against Australian school Doncaster Secondary College, coming out victorious in a 38-25 game on Thursday, Dec. 7. While playing an Australian team in the unexpected arrival of snow made for an unusual night, fans were overjoyed by it.

Going into the first quarter, the Lady Warriors had the advantage of winning the tip off, letting them score first with a two-point shot by Delaney Willing ‘21. A series of blocked shots on both teams kept the score tight, ending the quarter 7-5 in the Lady Warriors’ favor.

Both team’s offense picked up into the second quarter, yet the Lady Warriors remained dominant and ended the quarter at 17-12 with a two-point shot by Ana Morales ‘19.

“It’s more competitive and the rules are a bit different in America,” Alanna Drakopoulos ‘20 said. “We shoot free throws in different spots and time-outs aren’t allowed in the middle of a game.”

Following halftime, the third quarter began with Doncaster passing in the ball. A big save by Emma Zion ‘21 allowed her to make a clean two-point shot. The third quarter finished at 30-21 with the Lady Warriors in the lead.

The final quarter, although short, was heated. A pass by Taylor Cason ‘20 let Riley Hammock ‘20 advance the scoreboard with a three-point shot. Doncaster, however, was able to score four more points but ultimately was not able to surpass the Lady Warriors. To end the game, the Lady Warriors outbeat Doncaster 38-25.

Despite their loss, Doncaster showed their sportsmanship after the game by presenting kangaroo stuffed animals to each of the team-members. While the purpose of Doncaster’s trip to America was centered around basketball, they had a large interest in experiencing the general American culture.

“We’ve been organizing for a couple of years now for these girls to come out and experience what it’s like to play basketball here [in America],” Doncaster coach Jaimin Hudson said. “But we also wanted them to experience the culture because a lot of the time we have a certain perspective about America at home and wanted to see what it was really like.”

The next JV girls’ basketball game will take place Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Westwood againstPflugerville High School.
