On the night of Tuesday, Feb. 27, the varsity boys’ soccer team went up against the Hendrickson Hawks with hopes of gaining another district win following a tough loss against the Cedar Ridge Raiders, but ultimately ended the game with a score of 3-0 favoring the Hawks. While the outcome was not what the team had hoped for, the boys fought hard and gave everything they had until the very end.

“I think Hendrickson was a better team, they outplayed us when we gave up our mistakes but nevertheless we still had about the same amount of possession and shots on goal as them,” Felipe Centeno ‘19 said.

Several blocks were made by Oliver Harris ‘18 that initially prevented the Hawks from making a goal early on in the game. Then just three minutes into the first half, a surprising kick by a Hawks player brought the score to 1-0, giving Hendrickson a one point advantage over the Warriors. With the first half coming to an end, the Warriors showed promise as several attempted goal kicks were made by Nikola Djordjevic ‘21 and Caden Popps ‘18, with the help of Justin Lang ‘20 who successfully blocked an attempted shot by a Hawks player, stopping any chance the Hawks had of scoring another goal. Both teams struggled to add a point, ending the first half with the Hawks still ahead of the Warriors.

In the second half of the game, the Warriors performed numerous plays against the Hawks’ offense, as Djordjevic and Philip Richardson ‘20 both defended the ball from opposing players, before Eduardo Rodriguez ‘19 attempted to run the ball down the field. As the second half was coming to a close, a tense moment was played out when Cade Freehill ‘18 passed to Centeno who came close to making a goal, but was shy due to the Hawk goalkeeper’s save. By the end of the second half the Warriors were behind the Hawks, who managed to score two more goals before the end, sealing the game with a score of 3-0.

“Honestly they’re going into first place right now and we are staying in third so hopefully we can win out the rest of the games,” Centeno said.
