Following their blowout victory of 3-0 against the Vista Ridge Raiders, the Girls’ varsity soccer team took time to commemorate the team’s seniors on Friday, March 13.
“[Going into the game] I felt mainly excited because even though it’s our last district game, we still get to go play in playoffs so it’s not the last game,” Audrey Savoie ‘26 said. “But it’s also bittersweet, braiding people’s hair for one last home game, warming up at our home field, etc.”
The game began following a Westwood kickoff, the first half was filled with high pressure aggression by both teams. In the first half the Vista Ridge offense utilized the left side of the field. This was much different to that of Westwood, who made use of the right side, taking advantage of players such as Kaleia Coughlin ‘26 and Avery Cubbage ‘28. Following a successful tackle by Henley Patak ‘27, the ball was passed to Cubbage who rushed down toward the box for a shot on goal. Although Cubbage’s shot was deflected, Patak swooped in and converted the deflection to a goal, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Warrior defense did a good job continuing to get past the Raider offense and concluded the first half 1-0.
“In the first half playing defense was pretty easy because Sam did a good job directing the back line,” Coughlin said. “We were never in a dangerous position where I felt they had a lot of goal scoring opportunities.”
After a deliberate foul by the Raider defense, Westwood was given a free kick just outside the box, which was then converted to a goal by Adriana Cheng ‘26, 2-0. Cheng’s goal helped fuel the team to continue to press hard on the Raider defense, causing the Warriors to dominate possession of the ball towards the later end of the game. Coughing proved to be especially crucial, playing up on the wing helping to make multiple crosses into the box. The Raider defense were not able to keep up with the pressure, and so they resorted to kicking the ball out of bounds giving Westwood multiple corner kicks. One kick in particular, was converted into a goal by Jackson Bowen ‘26, bringing the Warriors to a towering lead of 3-0.
“In the second half I enjoyed playing winger because it allowed me to get up the field and create goal scoring opportunities,” Coughlin said. “It’s hard for me to pick which one I like better (defense or wing), but during this game I think probably wingers, because I feel more productive.”
Bowen’s goal was the last of the night, concluding the Warrior versus Raider game 3-0. After the game, the team celebrated their seniors, with their yearly “Senior Night” event. Players’ families brought signs and flowers to show love and appreciation for the seniors. The Warrior’s game against the Raiders concluded all of their district games, and they will now move onto the playoffs.
“Overall we had amazing passing during this game, we had the majority of possession no doubt, and senior night was incredible,” Savoie said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better, 16 people came to support me (parents, sister, grandparents, boyfriend, family friends, and friends), we won 3-0 and overall it meant so much.”
